Precise hard milling of a bevel gear cold forming die to 'jig accuracy' standards was demonstrated on a high precision vertical machining centre during the recent METAV show in Duesseldorf.
Precise hard milling of a bevel gear cold forming die to 'jig accuracy' standards was demonstrated on a high precision vertical machining centre during the recent METAV show in Duesseldorf The Yasda YBM-640V vertical machining centre (VMC) is able to attain a precision during hard milling of less than 5 microns and a surface finish near Ra 0.35 microns while milling cold forming die impressions to produce bevel gears

Yasda said that the as-milled die could be nitrated and required no finish polishing.
Therefore die production costs are reduced and lead time shortened.
The bevel gear die is in 1,2379 die steel of 60HRC hardness.
The die impression was sunk, beginning with an R5 ball-nosed cutter at 600 rev/min and 240mm/min feed for 7.4min.
It was followed by roughing, using a straight-shanked 10mm diameter cutter at 4000 rev/min, 2500mm/min feedrate in 6.2 min.
A third roughing sequence used an R3 ball-nose cutter at 5000 rev/min and 1200mm/min feed.
That operation took 19min.
Then followed to pre-finishing cuts using an R1.5 x 8 ball-nose cutter at 8500 rev/min, 2000mm/min feedrate in 36.1 min and an R1 x 8 ball-nosed cutter at 8500 rev/min, 2000mm/min feedrate in 28.5 min.
The final finishing cut to produce the finished die used a R1 x 8 CBN ball-nosed cutter at 20,000 rev/min and 2000mm/min feedrate in 50.3 min.
Total machining time was 147.5 min.
The Yasda YBM-640V has traverse movements X, Y and Z of 600 x 400 x 350mm, table size of 700 x 450mm, spindle power of 22kW/11kW and spindle speed range of 100 - 20,000/30,000 rev/min.
Yasda said that the YBM-640V features a patented pre-tensioned, self-adjusting spindle bearing assembly, which combined with extensive thermal control of the machine tool structure "opens new horizons in the hard milling technology." Yasda added that tool life and attainable surface finishes are much improved.
