'Intelligent machine tool' concept nears
reality

Bringing the 'intelligent machine tool' closer to reality a novel system control allows remote downloading of schedules, work data, programs and tool lists while providing operator machine data.

An integral part of the latest generation Mazak Integrex 'e' machine tools is the unique 'e' tower with its highly sophisticated software programmes A demonstration of the 'e' tower and its software is located adjacent to the 4 live 'e' machines on the stand at EMO

Mazak has developed its software programmes installed in the 'e' tower's PC to provide both management and operator with a range of easy-to-use and highly functional programmes and tutorials.

From their central computers, management can download individual machine scheduling data via the factory network, along with component drawings, materials data, machining programmes and tooling selection.

Operators can also be advised of their work schedules for up to a week ahead.

At the 'e' tower the operator has access to a comprehensive range of information.

Eleven function keys along the base of the screen provide unsurpassed levels of easily accessible data about the machine tool and its most productive operating modes.

All machine operating and maintenance manuals are available on-screen as is a virtual training programme that covers every aspect of machine utilisation from component drawings to optimised metal cutting.

Areas covered include tool and fixture selection, machine set-up's, all aspects of programming, cutting simulation and prove out details.

The tutorial is animated with a 'voice over' and written instructions displayed on the screen.

There is a section devoted to virtual tooling recovery and the automatic tool changer (ATC) - the latter being an area traditionally associated with lengthy and time consuming remedial action in the event of a breakdown or problem.

Now the operator can frequently undertake his own recovery without resorting to calling-in specialists.

Cameras in the ATC and machining envelope enable viewing from the e-tower screen and these images can also be transmitted via an electronic link to the Mazak Technical Service Centre where specialist can engage in conversations with the operator at the machine to discuss problems.

A third (mobile) camera is supplied with the 'e' tower which can be manipulated by the operator to record problems other than within the ATC or machining area or to illustrate any areas of concern on the finished component.

A tutorial guide is also included on machine maintenance, highlighting actions that need to be undertaken daily, weekly, monthly and annually to ensure the machine tool is maintained in optimum condition.

Every alarm switch on the machine issues a verbal and written warning with corrective actions also displayed.

Finally, the inter-reactive features of the 'e' tower enable the operator to type in personal data relating to specific components or machining operations so that he or a colleague working on the same machine can optimise future repeat machining operations.
