One hit CNC machining scores for subcontractor
Work that would have normally been scheduled for a machining centre can now be part of a 'one-hit' program on a multi-tasking mill-turn centre, as a subcontractor discovered.
In fact, exports from the European headquarters in Worcester account for 82% of Yamazaki Mazak U K's turnover, with machines being delivered to 28 countries across Europe.
While the bulk of this business is concentrated in the traditional markets of Germany, Italy, France and western Europe, Mazak has also developed sales in the former eastern bloc countries, opening a sales company in Prague in 2004 and establishing successful sales agencies in the Baltic States.
The overall success of the European sales operation has in turn led to a continuing expansion of the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Worcester.

Mill-turn versatility leads to reduced cycle times
Upper and lower turrets used on an advanced, multi-tasking, mill-turn centre at MACH 2008 allow balanced cutting to reduce cycle times in 'one-hit' machining.
This has recently undergone major investment in order to provide the additional capacity needed to produce in excess of 140 machine tools per month "Being honoured with a Queen's Award for our contribution to international trade is a tribute to the hard work of all of our staff," said David Jack, Group managing director Europe.
"We are proud of our export achievements, which have increased by 53 per cent over the past three years.
Central to that is the facility that we have here in Worcester, which not only manufactures more than 1400 machine tools annually but is also maintained as a 'working showroom' that plays host to over 1000 overseas customers and potential customers each year." This success for Mazak is a reflection of the investment that has gone into the Worcester factory over the last 20 years, where machines are not just assembled, but where castings and components are machined, sheet metal is laser-cut and welded, and critical parts are built on site.
The facility is the most complete and most up-to-date machine tool manufacturing site in Europe.
"The combination of highly automated state-of-the-art manufacturing technology with skilled, well trained and committed staff, is what lies behind this success," according to Jack.
"To win this Award for the manufacture and export of high technology machine tools in a fiercely competitive market is a fantastic achievement," he said, "And it is especially pleasing to do so in 2007, which is the 20th Anniversary of manufacturing Mazak machine tools in the UK.".
