Unmanned machining cell gains Nikkei
award

Designed for unmanned operation over extended periods, a cell with a multi-tasking CNC machine tool and an intelligent correct workpiece orientation robot has won the Nikkei Manufacturing Award.

The success of its technologically advanced e-BOT CELL 720 has resulted in Yamazaki Mazak being presented with the prestigious Nikkei Manufacturing Award The Nikkei Manufacturing Awards were launched in 2004 with the intention of encouraging development in the competitiveness of Japanese manufacturing industry, which remains the driving force of the Japanese economy

The award is presented to factories or research facilities that develop highly efficient manufacturing methods to compete with countries with lower labour costs.

Examples of the type of technology to be recognised include automatic manufacturing systems that digitalise the skills of highly experienced operators and computer programs that 'teach' manufacturing skills in a relatively short timescale.

Yamazaki Mazak's e-BOT CELL 720 fits those criteria, as it is designed for unmanned operation over extended periods and counters the threat posed by countries with lower labour costs.

The system also provides a counter to the shortage of skilled operators that is a continuing difficulty for Japan, the UK and our European neighbours.

The e-BOT CELL comprises a multi-tasking CNC machine tool and an intelligent robot that can automatically detect correct workpiece orientation.

The system can manufacture, unmanned, a variety of workpieces in small batch sizes for 720h (24h x 30 days).

Thanks to the e-BOT CELL, labour requirements are reduced by 80% and in-process time by 60% when compared to previous manufacturing methods while realising up-time rates well over 90%.

The e-Bot CELL was first introduced to the UK at MACH 2006 where it was a commended finalist in the 'Metalworking Production Awards'.

Since then, Yamazaki Mazak (UK) has integrated a Mazak Integrex e500HS-based e-BOT CELL into its Cyber Production facility in Worcester, where it is in constant use producing components to meet the increasing demand for Mazak machines produced here in the UK.

"Yamazaki Mazak is extremely proud to have been recognised with a Nikkei Manufacturing Award," said Tony Saunders, Yamazaki Mazak UK sales director. Request a free brochure from Yamazaki Mazak UK ...
