Enshu doubles rapid traverse rates for
VMCs

Three new, high speed, vertical machining centres have been introduced by Yuasa Warwick Machinery, sole UK agent for the Japanese machine tool builder, Enshu.

Three new, high speed, vertical machining centres have been introduced by Yuasa Warwick Machinery, sole UK agent for the Japanese machine tool builder, Enshu The ES series is a direct replacement for the Enshu S range, offering enhanced performance and capabilities in several important areas

In particular, rapid traverse speeds are almost doubled to 60m/min, while standard maximum spindle speeds are higher, providing increased productivity.

In addition, the new ES450 machine is available with a nitrogen pack, allowing high speed dry cutting in an inert atmosphere of flammable materials like magnesium.

All ES machines are developed with uninterrupted, round-the-clock productivity as a key design objective, MTBF (mean time between failure) being equivalent to three shift working, 5 days a week for a year - assumed as 5,000 hours.

Energy requirements are said to be 30 per cent lower than for the previous machines.

Specifications shared with the S range include compact dimensions and stiffness of the basic structure.

Of gantry format, the machines utilise a massive, high rigidity bed with vertical or inclined surfaces around the machining area for efficient swarf evacuation.

The saddle and spindle carrier are supported on generously proportioned slides and the larger ES450 has twin Y-axis ballscrew drives to eliminate crabbing.

The result is a system with very high dynamic stiffness capable of heavy cutting without vibration.

Machining envelope for the ES400 is 400mm in X by 400mm in Y by 380mm in Z.

An additional 210mm of travel in Y is provided for tool exchange from either a 12- or 16-tool magazine.

Drum type or high speed magazines may be specified, with the latter offering one second tool exchange of BT30 taper tooling up to 3kg in weight.

The ES450 provides a work envelope measuring 650mm in X by 450mm in Y by 460mm in Z, and has a 20-tool magazine (BT40).

In both cases, rapid traverse speeds are 60m/min in all linear axes and cutting feed rate is programmable in the range up to 15 m/min.

Spindle speed range on the ES400 is 40 - 13,000 rpm with a 20,000 rpm option available, while the ES450 offers 12,000 rpm with a 15,000 rpm option.

Other equipment which may be specified includes additional rotary axes on the worktable for up to 5-axis machining.

In addition, the machines can be supplied with a rotary pallet changer to allow uninterrupted working.

An option unique to the ES450 is its availability as a specialist dry cutting machine.

In this guise it comes complete with an extraction system capable of separating nitrogen from the atmosphere; and an internal enclosure to allow machining to be completed in an inert atmosphere.

Cutting using nitrogen in place of a conventional oil or water based coolant has been demonstrated to have a number of advantages and has been adopted by some Japanese manufacturers.

For machining of magnesium, which is increasingly being used for automotive components, tests have demonstrated the possibility of using much increased cutting speeds - 150m/min as opposed to 30m/min in air - without fear of igniting the swarf.

Dry cutting is also proving popular in ferrous machining applications, as in some circumstances tool life is enhanced.

Additionally, the availability of a coolant which generates no effluent has a beneficial environmental impact and also saves money, as between seven and 17 per cent of a conventional machine's running costs are coolant-related.
