Upgrading of the Enshu JExxS range of horizontal machining centres has included the addition of a new model, the JE30S, which is the first BT30 taper machine from this Japanese manufacturer.

Upgrading of the Enshu JExxS range of horizontal machining centres has included the addition of a new model, the JE30S, which is the first BT30 taper machine from this Japanese manufacturer Modifications throughout the range - available in the UK from Yuasa Warwick Machinery - include higher spindle speeds and faster traverse rates for improved productivity

Measures have been taken to minimise operational power consumption, which is now 30 per cent lower than for previous models.

Additionally, all machines have been developed to meet Enshu's 5,000 hours mean-time-between-failure reliability standard.

The Enshu JE30S is aimed squarely at the market for machines capable of achieving high rates of productivity on smaller components.

It is available in both line-transfer format for production line applications and as a stand-alone, twin pallet, horizontal machining centre.

Machines of this type are in use at Yamaha's Italian factory where they are used for production of scooter components.

Machining envelope of the Enshu JE30S is defined by X-axis travel of 500mm, Y-axis travel of 350mm (vertical) and Z-axis travel of 300mm.

In keeping with its potential use in transfer line applications, all axis travels are on the column.

Movement is supported on recirculating rolling element linear bearings so that rapid traverse speeds of 60 m/min can be sustained.

Up to 16 BT30 taper tools can be stored in the drum-type tool magazine, which uses an arm-less exchange system to achieve chip-to-chip time of three seconds.

The spindle, which is directly driven by a 3.0kW AC motor, offers speeds in the range 40 to 13,000 rpm.

Rigid tapping is available at speeds up to 6,000 rpm.

Upgrades made to other machines in the Enshu JE range include faster rapid traverse on the JE40S, up from 36m/min to 40m/min.

Likewise the JE50S gains both faster rapid traverse, which rises from 40m/min to 50m/min, and a higher speed spindle.

A 12,000 rpm spindle is now standard, with the option of 15,000 rpm.

More extensive modifications have been applied to the JE60S.

Z-axis travel increases to 630mm, giving the machine a 600 x 600 x 630mm work envelope.

This machine also gains oil cooled ballscrews - a first for Enshu - for enhanced thermal stability and improved dimensional accuracy.

In addition, the tool change system (BT 40 taper) is upgraded to provide a 2.8 second chip-to-chip time.

Rapid traverse speed is raised from 40m/min to 50m/min and the standard spindle is now a 13,000 rpm unit (previously 8,000 rpm).

A 20,000 rpm spindle is now an option.

By extending the JExxS range of machines in this way, Enshu has ensured that its machines continue to offer class leading performance in high quality production environments.
